Sunday Mailbag: Political Work?
Q: I see you do little or no political cartoons or caricatures that depict political subjects or characters in funny or unpleasant themes. Do you avoid doing these or they are simply not in your interest to do it? What are the risks for doing and publishing such artworks?
A: I guess you don’t read MAD. I definitely do not avoid it. I do plenty of political stuff, but I’m not an editorial cartoonist and not very interested in making it a focus of my work. Politically themed jobs are just jobs like any other jobs.
The “risks” you mention are mainly just entering the extremely toxic social media waters of today’s political climate in the US. If you want to do political work you can expect plenty of that, on either side.
Thanks to Lee F.H from Singapore for the question. If you have a question you want answered about cartooning, illustration, MAD Magazine, caricature or similar, e-mail me and I’ll try and answer it here!
