Sunday Mailbag- Which Movies?
Q: Besides “The Rise of Skywalker”, what other movies are you planning on doing parodies of in your book?
A: By “book”, do you mean CLAPTRAP, the book of movie parodies MAD writer Desmond Devlin and I are currently shamelessly crowdfunding on IndieGoGo?
I thought so.
Right now we are planning to do ten full length movie parodies, with some extra movie related gag features in between. However if we reach our funding goal we will have stretch goals that will add up to two more full-length spoofs for a possible total of twelve.
We have several classic movies already picked out (in fact Des has the second script done and I’m already working on the art, and a third script almost done) but we don’t know the total list yet because of several factors.
First, we want to do a number of new movies, and we aren’t sure which ones will actually be coming out in the next six months or so, nor which ones will be “spoof-worthy”, so we need to reserve several spots in our list for movies we haven’t seen yet.
Second, there are tiers in our IndieGoGo campaign that allow for input from our backers on which movies we will be doing! The “Doofus” tier (or higher) gets the backer’s name printed in the book as a supporter, and it also allows them to suggest movies they want to see us spoof! Once we get everyone’s suggestions we will compile a list of the top requested movies and all the Doofuses (and up) get to vote on which ones they want us to do. We’ll do a parody of the top one (or maybe two) vote getters! There’s another tier called the ‘Megalomaniac” that allows the backer to straight up tell us what movie they want us to parody. So, we need to leave a few spots open for those also.
So what are the movies we have already picked out? We are not saying yet. We will be revealing our second parody subject in about two weeks, complete with a sneak peek look at the two page splash like with did with ‘Rise of Skywalker”. It’s a movie that today is one of the biggest “cult classic” films ever, but at the time was not very successful in the box office… kind of like “A Christmas Story”, which Des and I did for MAD last year. If we get funded, we will do a reveal every month or so of another of the films we are doing along with the splash or some art from the parody.
What??? You haven’t contributed to our Indiegogo campaign yet? You say you want to move up to one of the higher tiers so you can have a say in which movies we spoof? What are you waiting for, you yutz?
Thanks to a lot of people for the question. If you have a question you want answered for the mailbag about cartooning, illustration, MAD Magazine, caricature or similar, e-mail me and I’ll try and answer it here!

I jumped onboard right away! I’ve never gone onto to IndieGoGo before and in this case I’m embarrassed to say I didn’t realize you could scroll the multiple options. I saw the first two for a pdf of the book or a hardcover and thought that was it. Since then I’ve discovered the other really cool options as you swipe over. At any rate, glad this looks like a runaway success for you and Desmond! Too bad about MAD quitting these parodies but so appreciative that you two will be carrying on the tradition. I hope you end up being richly rewarded for your efforts. As a reader and a fan the book will be my reward!
Thanks for the support!!

If there is a different tier you now regret not having chosen, Indiegogo allows you to change or adjust your backing. It’s one of the reasons we went with their website.
But the initial book tier is a good perk, too. We’re working hard to ensure that you (and everyone) will be thoroughly satisfied by the book that they themselves made happen.
Thanks a lot for helping to keep the parody tradition alive!
